  • Be Careful Out There: Fourth of July Is The Most Dangerous Holiday of the Year

    on July 2, 2015

STFH wishes you a happy and healthy Fourth of July weekend. We urge everyone to exercise caution and common sense this Fourth of July weekend (while still having a bit of fun, of course). History shows that 4th of July is actually the most dangerous holiday of the year. In fact, statistics demonstrate that the 4th is more dangerous than New Year’s Eve or Christmas time. It may be the dangerous combination of fireworks coupled with alcohol consumption, excessive drunk driving, more cars on the road, plus swimming at the beach or lake after the lifeguards are off duty.  The National Safety Council estimated that during last year’s Fourth of July festivities there were 385 deaths and 41,200 injuries — including car crashes,  swimming incidents and fireworks accidents. No doubt fireworks accidents and drunk driving likely made up a large percentage of these incidents. Indeed, Independence Day has historically been the deadliest day on the road for Americans. Between 2008 and 2012, July 4 had an average of 127 deaths in crashes each year, according to data collected by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. New Year’s Day followed with an average of 122 deaths annually. July 5 also ranks up there, with an average of 110 deaths annually.

So please – do not become a statistic this year. Have fun, celebrate America’s independence, enjoy your family and friends, and be safe !!
