SFTH 05Dogs are known as “man’s best friend,” but there are times when a canine can be your worst enemy. Most dog attacks are not solely the dog’s fault. Thus, it is common for victims of dog bites to not take the event as seriously as they should. However, even a dog bite that does not result in serious injury can have serious consequences.

According to the American Humane Association, approximately 4.7 million dog bites occur in our country each year. It is estimated that two-thirds of the bites occurred on or near the victim’s property and most of the victims knew the dog. The insurance industry pays more than $1 billion in claims related to dog bites each year!

If you or a loved one has been attacked by an animal, it can result in physical, emotional and psychological injuries. A few examples of common personal injuries resulting from canine attacks are:

    • Fractures and broken bones
    • Scars and disfiguring injuries
    • Contraction of a disease
    • Emotional trauma, even post traumatic stress syndrome
    • Lacerations and abrasions
    • Crush injuries
    • Severe damage to muscles
    • Loss of limbs
    • Death

Unfortunately, children the ages of 5 to 9 years are the most vulnerable to being the victim of a dog bite, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This fact alone is reason to report an animal attack and help prevent future attacks. You should seek immediate medical care and notify the owner of the dog that the attack occurred. It is also essential to take steps to preserve any evidence of your injuries including taking pictures, keep the clothing worn during the attack, contact information of witnesses and any other helpful information you have. Finally, you should confer with a personal injury attorney to learn more about your legal options for recovering compensation for your damages suffered.
